Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • ½ cup granulated sugar for coating
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Method

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches) and shape it into a pretzel.
  8. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg, then mix ½ cup sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle it generously over the pretzels. Add a pinch of coarse sea salt on top.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

  • You can also experiment with different toppings like crushed nuts or flavored sugars.
  • For a savory option, omit the cinnamon and sugar, and sprinkle with garlic powder and cheese before baking.
